
Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp – Summer 2007
After three summers of conducting the Blue Jazz Band at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp,
Dr. Fanning conducted the Gold Jazz Band this summer. The Gold Jazz Band is made
up of mostly upper classmen in high school and represents the most experienced musicians auditioning for placement in the jazz program.
This year’s Gold Jazz Band members were:
Karl Soule and John Malefyt – alto saxophones; Scott Jacobsen and Levi Grundner – tenor saxophones; Stephen Timko – baritone saxophone; Matt Sumner, Michael Burkett, Jeff Easterling and Alex Freds – trumpets; Kurt Trowbridge, Michael Olney, Patrick Hermesmeyer, Eric Hill – trombones; Emily Roman – piano; Jeff McBrayer – bass; and Brett Beddow – drums.
The Gold Jazz Band’s final Sunday program consisted of the following:
Basically Blues – by Phil Wilson; Bossa Rio – by John Fedchock; Quintessence – by Quincy Jones; Doodlin’ –
by Horace Silver and arranged by John LaBarbera; Early Autumn – by Woody Herman and Ralph Burns; and Granada Smoothie – by Mark Taylor.
Along with Dr. Fanning, the jazz faculty consisted of Tim Froncek – drums; Joshua Quinlan – saxophones;
David Horger – trombone; Christian Berg – bass; and Paul Lesinski – piano. The faculty sextet performed lived at the
Faculty Showcase Concert, at Department Night and in the studios of Blue Lake Public Radio. Works performed included:
Crack Pot – by Joshua Quinlan; Symphony in Riffs – composed by Benny Carter/arranged by David Horger; Carter’s Blues –
by Paul Lesinski; Blue Dialogue– by Christian Berg; Peace – arranged by David Horger; and Speak Low –
by Kurt Weill/arranged by Brent Wallarab.
